Ghorbal, also of Egypt, whose historical analysis of the principal intellectual motivations that have made Islam into a world religion is a remarkable accomplishment, not because of scholarly originality, which Ghorbal expressly disclaims, but because of the balanced evaluation of his tradition which inspires his efforts.
The chapters on China and Indonesia fall somewhere in between.
They are written by secular-minded Moslems who, it is clear, have not made a special study of Islam—a circumstance from which the reader in a sense profits, because the authors allow themselves to describe, at fairly generous length, the popular form which their faith has taken in their communities. Their chapters are a treasure trove of religious folklore, and demonstrate how completely local life has, in the minds of the faithful, become Islamicized regardless of what the strict theologian may think of the customs practiced.
Islam : the straight path
At the same time the purely local character of a good many of the customs is shown to affect only the paraphernalia of the faith: the diversity of Moslem life in outlying parts serves to underline the essential unity of the area of Moslem civilization. On the whole, the Western reader, scholarly or lay, will come away from the present book with an impression of Islam closely paralleling the judgment pronounced by Dr.

The five pillars of Islam are the profession of faith, prayer, almsgiving, the Ramadan fast, and the Hajj or pilgrimage to Mecca. Different schools of law handle other areas in different ways: Esposito touches on family law divorce and inheritance , the relationship between customary practice and Quranic prescription in rules about veiling and seclusion , Sufism, and Shii differences. Premodern revivalist movements such as the Wahhabi movement in Arabia, the Sanusi and Mahdi movements in north Africa, and Shaykh Ahmad Sirhindi and Shah Wali Allah in India attempted "to reclaim and implement authentic teachings of the Quran and Sunna".
In contrast modernist movements led by men such as Jamal al-Din al-Afghani, Muhammad Abduh and Rashid Rida, and Sayyid Ahmad Khan and Muhammad Iqbal in India "felt free to suggest that many practices acceptable in the past were no longer relevant", claiming "the right and necessity to formulate new regulations" and advocating "an adaptation of Islam to the changing conditions of modern society".
And beginning in the first half of the twentieth century, neorevivalist movements such as the Muslim Brotherhood and the Jamaat-i-Islami saw Islam as "a comprehensive ideology for personal and public life, the foundation for Muslim state and society".
Meanwhile traditionalists defended the special status of the ulama religious scholars and opposed reforms, especially of family law. At the core of differences were debates over ijtihad rational analysis and interpretation of law.

Al-Shaffi wrote that there were four sources for Islamic law: Where it does speak to an issue, however, it is given absolute preeminence. The argument for the position of the Prophet as the prime example flows from the very natural supposition that he was guided closely by God in his actions.
Local consensus — Where the Sunna and the Quran are silent, local precedent and tradition must be heard. These tend to create regional differences and common examples given are centered around policies for divorce and dowry establishment.
Analytical Reasoning — Lastly, law can be established by logical deduction from stated laws that are deemed analogous to the situation being looked at. The example given was the establishment of a minimum dowry.
